REVIEW: Dark Longing

Dark Longing
Pure/Dark Series #2
Author: Aja James
Pub Date: January 18, 2018

Synopsis:

“Every story has more than one side, like a crystal that captures and reflects different colors of light. Do not take for granted what you think you know, for until you hold the entire jewel in your palm, the temptation is to fall prey to illusion and deception.”

This is a story of the Dark Ones…

Inanna: the vampire warrior

Known as the Angel of Death among her kind, she has lived millennia alone, one of the remaining True Bloods in existence, unconsciously longing for the one male she could never have.

Gabriel: the forbidden human

His soul recognizes hers from the first encounter. With the first touch, he is awakened. Though he does not know it, he has been searching for her across the ages.

But even as they are finally reunited, their love faces seemingly impossible odds. Will history repeat itself or will they break all the rules and chart a new course together?

My Review ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The tale continues in this second instalment but in a twist, we see the other side of the coin. The Dark Ones. I honestly think it is a wonderful idea. Normally we have one good side and the other bad. We don’t much get the chance to see the good and the bad come together and work towards a common goal. This book shows just how relative good and bad can be.

Nana Chastain is a Dark One or as most of us know them, a vampire. She lives but she does not live. She is in want of something. Something that is just out of reach.

When his wife passes away, Gabriel D’Angelo is told that Nana Chastain, a woman he has never seen and knows nothing about will have joint custody of his son, Benji. When Gabriel meets Nana for this first time he feels things he has never felt before-not even for his wife.

Nana already loves Benji. She has since the moment of his birth. When she first meets Gabriel, she feels inexplicable drawn to him and it does not take her long to fall in love with him as well. As their feelings grow, an evil entity lurks threatening everyone and everything they hold dear.

Will these two soulmates make their way back to each other or will they once again be torn apart?

This is the second book in a series and has a HFN ending. Although it can be read as a standalone, I believe it would be better to read this series in order.

I love being immersed in this world Aja has created. She captures and holds my undivided attention and delivers a sexy and intriguing read every time. Throughout this book, she builds relationships, strengthens ties and sets up the current and future books beautifully. I was riveted.

This is definitely a complex read with many facets and I can’t help but feel some story lines are a little rushed. I also had a hard time understanding and believing Gabe and his wife’s relationship.

That aside, the question remains, who is behind all these misdeeds. I feel like we’ve only scratched the surface with these two first books. There are many loose ends and they must all intertwine somehow. I am hooked and cannot wait to see how it all pieces together. This is a paranormal read that should definitely grace your TBR list.

Thank you to Aja James for the ARC.  All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Here is my review of Pure Healing, the first book in the series.

Bloom
The Order Series 1
by Nikki Rae
Genre: Adult Dark Contemporary Romance

Synopsis

Given to The Grimm Order as an infant, Fawn was raised in a world shaped by the rich and powerful. When she was sold at the age of nine to a Suitor, Fawn believed he would protect her from the “Mainworld”, where those who know nothing about the Order live. Living with the cruel man who bought her freedom, she finds just what the Order is about: money, control, and status for the Owner and humiliation and abuse for those they own.

Unwilling to accept the expectations of being Owned, Fawn goes from golden girl to maid, content to live in the shadows of the Order as long as she isn’t Owned again.

It’s been ten years since she disgraced her former Owner’s name, and now the brooding Frenchman Elliot Lyon wants her. Master Lyon is kind, smart, and unlike any man she’s met. She doesn’t want to admit it to herself, but Fawn is drawn to him despite constantly planning her next escape.

Even the prettiest flowers have thorns, and Master Lyon is hiding secrets that will uproot everything she thinks she knows about him.

My Review ⭐⭐⭐ (3.5 STARS)

What would it be like to have you every move monitored, to be told what to do, to have to agree when you didn’t, to have your life ruled by someone else?

This was a dark read that I enjoyed.  It was captivating and engaging.  My curiousness was peaked wondering where the story was headed.  Why did Master Lyon choose Fawn out of all the beautiful girls there?  Why does he show her kindness?  Why does he care?  This leads up to a twist I DID NOT see coming!

This story is told through Fawn’s POV only.  I believe this affected the pace of the story because there was an overwhelming amount of internal dialogue.  I agree that her internal dialogue had to be explored however, for me, it left a lack in verbal interaction between the characters and Elliott’s character development also suffered. I also feel like this story has only scratched the surface and I would have liked it to delve just a little deeper.

The writing in this story overall was wonderful.  The way Fawn’s character is explored and developed is perfect.  She was a strong and compelling character.  She is no mouse.  She is crafty and cunning.  She fights, argues and plots her escapes.  She is constantly thinking of her next move.  She weighs the pros and the cons of her behaviour.  She is a survivor and she’ll go through and do anything to escape.

Although I did not get much of Elliott’s character, he is kind to Fawn.  He is her master, but he always gives her a choice, he does not demand.  I’m hoping in the next book, I get to see more of him.

This book ended on a cliff-hanger and I am engaged and captivated enough that I want to know what happens to these characters.  This book is just a little tease into this enthralling world.  I am definitely excited to read the next chapter.

 Excerpt

Ice clinked in his glass as he took another gulp and then set it back down. “He wasn’t supposed to touch you,” he finally said.

I knew it was impossible, but it sounded almost as if he was apologizing. Angered by his audacity—that he thought I would buy one word he refused to say—I couldn’t bite my tongue. “Why does it matter?”

My tone was ice; I had to wrap my arms around myself again.

I heard him inhale, but he still didn’t face me. “Of course it matters.” The edge to his voice sounded as appalled as I had felt the moment he’d tied my hands behind my back and made me even more helpless than I already was.

Anger flared in me even brighter. “Why should it?” I asked. “I’m only here for what men like that want to do with me. He’s just more honest about his intentions than some.” I wanted to sew my mouth shut. No one ever spoke to their Owner in such a way. I knew better, yet I couldn’t stop the truth from spewing out of my mouth. I squeezed my eyes shut, waiting for the impact of his open palm across my cheek, still damp from the condensation on his glass, but it didn’t come.

He casually took another drink of amber liquid, leaving just enough remaining in case he decided he wanted more. “Dry off.”

REVIEW: Hurts to Love You

Hurts to Love You

Author Alisha Rai

Pub Date: March 27, 2018

Synopsis:
Being bad never felt so good, in the third novel in Alisha Rai’s sexy Forbidden Hearts series!

Well-behaved women don’t lust after men who love to misbehave.

Heiress Evangeline Chandler knows how to keep a secret . . . like her life-long crush on the tattooed hottie who just happens to be her big brother’s friend. She’s a Chandler, after all, and Chandlers don’t hook up with the help. Then again, they also don’t disobey their fathers and quit their respectable jobs, so good-girl rules may no longer apply.

Gabriel Hunter hides the pain of his past behind a smile, but he can’t hide his sudden attraction to his friend’s sheltered little sister. Eve is far too sweet to accept anything less than forever and there’s no chance of a future between the son of a housekeeper and the town’s resident princess.

When a wedding party forces Eve and Gabe into tight quarters, keeping their hands off each other will be as hard as keeping their clothes on. The need that draws them together is stronger than the forces that should shove them apart . . . but their sparks may not survive the explosion when long-buried secrets are finally unearthed.
My Review ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Evangeline Chandler is an introvert and has self esteem issues stemming from the men in her life.

Gabriel (Gabe) Hunter, is an extrovert that is hiding an age-old family secret

On the outside, their love seems impossible. They are on opposite sides of a family feud and have a 12-year age gap between them.  If that isn’t enough, he is a tattoo artist while she is an heiress to one of the richest families around.  How can these two people from opposite sides of the spectrum ever be together?

This is a wonderful story of family, friendship and love.  It is the third and final book in the Forbidden Hearts series and is told in dual POV.  It is also the first book I read in this series.  Although it can be read as a standalone, I believe reading the previous books in this series first would lend more enjoyment to this last instalment.  This is the denouement if you will to the series and as result it concludes and mentions many characters, family ties, dynamics and history.

With that aside, this was a well written, engaging read.  I would not hesitate to read another book from this author.

Thank You to Edelweiss + and Avon Books for the ARC.  All thoughts an opinions are my own.

Bad Business A Bad Boys of Sports Novel
By: Nicole Edwards
Release Date: March 27, 2018

Synopsis:

This player’s got a lot to learn if he wants to score . . . with the boss’s daughter.

Stone: Football is more than a game to me. It’s my calling. Becoming the Dallas Wranglers’ starting quarterback before I retire is a dream come true, but with a few wins under my belt, suddenly everyone wants a piece of me. And even though being in the spotlight has its perks—beautiful women, star treatment, more beautiful women—what really gets me sweating is the watchful gaze of my sexy-as-hell PR coach, Savannah Andrews. The catch? Her father is kind of my boss. . . .

Savannah: In my family, football is big business. When your dad owns an NFL franchise, you learn a thing or two about schmoozing, and from what I can tell, it’s not a skill in Jason Stone’s playbook. Sure, the veteran quarterback is literally larger than life. With broad shoulders, muscles on muscles, and a mouth made for kissing, he may be one of the hottest men in the league—and I should know. I’ve turned down enough players to start my own all-star team. But those guys just wanted to get close to my father. Meanwhile, Stone is getting temptingly close . . . to me.

The Bad Boys of Sports come to life in these sexy standalone novels by New York Times bestselling author Nicole Edwards:

BAD REPUTATION | BAD BUSINESS

This ebook includes an excerpt from another Loveswept title.

My Review ⭐⭐⭐⭐

This was a funny, fast-paced sexy read.  It’s not what I was expecting when I picked up this novel It is so much better.

Jason Stone is a veteran QB drafted to a new team with a losing streak.  He is only focused and looking forward to winning another Super Bowl.  Throughout the years, Jason has been called the “bad boy” of football.  His reputation is well earned from all the women, booze and parties he has partaken of.   He is 34 and a little jaded from the many years of women seeing him only as a paycheck

Savannah is a 29 -year -old executive vice president and chief public relations officer.  She meets Jason at a party hosed by her father.  Both of them do no want to be there for different reasons.

Upon their first meeting, there is a connection, a spark.  Their banter and teasing had me smirking and laughing.  I enjoyed her best friend’s antics as well. He does not know who she is but she knows who he is.  She has been a good-girl all her life but with him, she wants to be oh so bad.  He does not intend to be sidetracked or attracted to the owner’s daughter.  He is not expecting to have a one and done with her either, but he does.  The only problem?  He can’t stop thinking about their night together.  He wants more.

This book had me turning the pages.  The banter when they first meet is adorable and cute.  He teases her and I was completely enjoying and loving the repartee.  I loved the chemistry between Jason and Savannah.  It is scorching hot.  They both like control in their lives however during the intimate moments, Savannah relents and gives up all control.

I would have enjoyed a bigger look into the secondary characters like Savannah’s friend or even Savannah’s past with her mother.  However, when all is said and done, this is an extremely enjoyable read.

REVIEW: The Widow of Papina

My review ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Going into this book, I didn’t know what to expect.  This is a new to me author and based on the synopsis, I was intrigued. I was not disappointed.
This is an emotionally gripping story that will pull on your heartstrings. It is poignant, believable and heartfelt. I loved all of the characters in this book.  I wanted to be a part of their town.  I wanted to be their friend.  I was immersed in this little town as well as the drama, love and arguments that unfolded.  There were twists and turns I did not see coming and the love that develops between Braydon and Paul was wonderfully written.  It is not rushed or forced.  Although there are not many heated scenes, the ones that are written are hot and heavy.
There is some drama in this book, but I do not believe it is over-the-top or that it in any detracts from the book as a whole.

Braydon is a strong character with a lot on her plate.  A missing husband, a newborn, and a mute teenager.  She manages to juggle all of this and much more.  I absolutely envied Brayden for her strength to deal with it all
Paul is a Sheriff and he is absolutely sweet.  I loved his character.  He is a man, in my opinion, that everyone dreams about having.  He is mannerly, helpful, strong and willing to fight for what he wants.

“I’m going to fight for you, because no matter how much you think we can’t be together, I know one day we will.”
I don’t want to divulge too much as the book is enjoyed not knowing the twists and turns but suffice it to say that I liked this book.  It is heartbreaking and warm.  I would love to revisit this town and its characters in a new book if the author chose to do so.  I would recommend this to anyone who likes a mystery as well as a well-written romance.

I received an ARC of this book.  All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Review: Thirsty

Thirsty by Mia Hopkins
Review: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (3.50)  Thirsty

A gangster hiding from his past. A single mom fighting for her future. Can she show this bad boy the man he’s meant to be?

“Mia Hopkins is an imaginative author who doesn’t take the easy road to a formulaic book.”—USA Today’s Happy Ever After blog

My name is Salvador Rosas. Back in the barrio, my past is written on the walls: ESHB. Short for East Side Hollenbeck, my father’s gang—my gang. Hell, it’s a family tradition, one that sent both my brothers away. They used to call me “Ghost” because I haunted people’s dreams. Now I’ve got nothing going for me except a hipster gringo mentoring me in a new career. An ex-con making craft beer? No mames.

Still, people in this neighborhood look out for one another. That’s how I became Vanessa Velasco’s unwelcome tenant. Chiquita pero picosa. She’s little, but with curves so sweet they’re dangerous. I remember Vanessa from the old days, the straight-A student with big plans. Plans that were derailed by another kid stupid enough to think he was bulletproof. Now Vanessa knows better than to believe in empty promises. There’s fire in her . . . and if I touch her, I might get burned.

I’m trying everything I can to go straight. But when East Side Hollenbeck comes calling, I might have to risk it all to find out if there’s a future for Vanessa and me. Because she’s the only one who can quench my thirst for something real.

The Rosas brothers will return in Trashed!

Salvador Rosas is a man balancing his life on a tightrope... His newfound honest life versus his ties to the East Side Hollenbeck Gang. He knows the gang will come for him, it's only a matter of time. One wrong step however and he will plummet, causing himself to be deprived of everything he ever wanted and desired.

Vanessa Velasco is a single mom trying to improve her life for her daughter. She has no time for dealing with a gangster who just got out of prison but Sal is saying and doing all the right things..

When the attraction between the two can no longer be denied, Vanessa agrees to a two month affair after which, all ties will be severed.

With the ESHB gang lurking and such a finite amount of time with Vanessa, how will his thirst for more ever be quenched?

This book was good but it could have been great if, in my opinion, Sal's gang life and affiliations would have been explored more. We do get a glimpse into the life towards the end but I believe it would have been a more powerful and vivid read if the interactions were throughout the book instead of at the end.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It was well written and flowed well. The intimate scenes between Sal and Vanessa were hot and heavy. I loved how Salvadore could be badass but also sweet and tender when needed. I think I have a crush. I definitely can't wait to read more from this author and from what I see, there is another book!

REVIEW: No Earls Allowed

⭐⭐⭐

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a lady can do anything a man can do: backwards and in high-heeled dancing slippers.

Lady Juliana, daughter of the Earl of St. Maur, needs all the help she can get. She's running a ramshackle orphanage, London's worst slumlord has illicit designs on her, and her father has suddenly become determined to marry her off.

Enter Major Neil Wraxall, bastard son of the Marquess of Kensington, sent to assist Lady Juliana in any way he can. Lucky for her, he's handy with repairs, knows how to keep her and the orphans safe, and is a natural leader of men.

Unfortunately for both of them, the scandal that ensues from their mutual attraction is going to lead them a merry dance...

Neil Wraxall is plagued with nightmares as result of his time on the battlefield.  Under his command, several of his friends and his brother lost their lives-all of which he feels tremendous culpability for.  To dull the pain, he always keeps a glass of gin on the bedside and when the terrors of the past become to much, he indulges.
In the warzone, he felt rage and now that the rage is gone, there is a heavy weight on his shoulders.  One his unable to divest himself of. He relives his past constantly and barely sleeps and is almost always alone.  When he wishes company, he goes to the Draven Club.  And although he gets company there, he cannot completely escape his demons as there is a in memoriam to the fallen soldiers that he commanded that hangs directly in view of all who enter.

Neil is used to taking orders and following them.  So, when he receives a summons from his father, he answers.  On this occasion, he is told by his father to retrieve Lady Juliana from the orphanage in Spitalfields and take her home to her father.  His father tells him that it is a trifling request and should not take much time to complete.  When Neill arrives, however, he realizes it is anything but.  Juliana is headstrong an willful and she outright refuses to return home.  However, he is a soldier and he always completes his missions no matter how difficult they may seem.  He knows Lady Juliana will not leave due to the issues surrounding The SunnyBrook home for Boys.  There is no cook, the orphanage is in disrepair, the roof leaks and she has a violent crimelord demanding payment – or else.  He decides to stay despite the impropriety of it all and solve her problems so that she will be more amenable to returning home.
Lady Juliana, daughter of Earl St Maur, lost her sister in childbirth and lost her nephew to his cold-hearted, selfish father.  You can also say that she lost her father for all that his is alive.  Since the death of her mother, her father has been emotionally absent and she spends most of her time at the Sunnybrook Home for Boys.

One night she is called away from a ball by Robbie, one of the orphans she has charge of and races back to the orphanage to find out that her cook is packing her bags.  She knew this was an eventuality due to the disrepair and the missing staples in the larder disappearing.  Never mind the friendly rats that run amok.
Now, Julia has much responsibility and no where to turn for help.  She uses her pin money to buy food and to do whatever repairs the orphanage requires but it is sadly not enough.  Her father does not like her staying in such a run-down part of the city and wants her to come home.  Julia, who loves her charges, refuses.  She will not loose another child she loves.

Juliana now has greater worries.  Mr Slag, a crimelord, who runs the rookery where the orphanage resides is violent and cruel.  He has set his sights on Juliana and demands payment of a thousand pounds for her protection or she must warm his bed.  She tries to avoid him but due to the time she now spends at the orphanage, its almost unavoidable. .  Juliana refuses to accept but she must make a choice, Mr Slag will not wait forever.
I absolutely loved Neil’s character.  He is known as a hero but refuses to acknowledge it because he believes that he is to blame for the deaths of the men who died under his command.  He is also a tortured as a result of finding his brother’s dead body on the battlefield.  It is an image he cannot forget. Neil is lonely and is verging towards alcoholism to solve his problems.  He is also kind and a caring as well as a virgin!.  I love when he makes the rats a cage for the boys even though he absolutely detests them.
At the orphanage, he starts off not caring for any of the boys nor Juliana besides getting her home.  Towards the end, he is actively showing them how to cook basic meals and make their beds and a few other things a long the way.
Julia’s character however, I did not like as much.  She seemed to be completely absorbed with the orphanage and had no real care for Neil besides the attraction she feels. But attraction does not equal love. She has a lot of distrust of men, understandably, but I believe it was overblown and that she projected too much on Neil.  He does good deed after good deed and still she mistrusts him.  I have a hard time with that.  I really wanted to love Julia’s character but something about her character rubbed me wrong.  I did love how she cared for the orphans under her care but besides that, I don’t have much to say.

The flow of this book, for me, was really slow in the beginning.  I found myself putting down my kindle many a time to do other things.  However, because I loved Neil's character, the children at the orphanage and Mrs Dunwitty, Juliana’s governess as a child, I forged on.

Around the three-quarter mark, the writing I was expecting from this author came through, the pace picked up and my enjoyment of the book and Juliana skyrocketed. From there on, I did not put the book down.
Thank you to NetGalley and Sourcebooks Casablanca for the ARC.  All thoughts and opinions are my own.

My Review ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Have you ever been in love so much it hurt? What if that person, that soulmate, that ONE for you was not yours to love? If an opportunity presented itself but was surrounded by insurmountable sadness and loss, would you still do anything and everything to make them yours? When does it all become too much?

This is the heartbreakingly beautiful love story between Addison Fawn and Daniel Cross.

Wow. I can't believe it's over. What a ride! I loved every single second of this book. It is told in dual POV and it is perfectly paced and written. From the very beginning, this book
had me wired and on the edge of my seat. Some scenes left me absolutely breathless. Willow Winters' writing is exquisite and it makes you FEEL the electricity and the pull between these characters. The spark, sensuality and absolute WANT between Addison and Daniel is undeniable and you experience every second of it. This is without a doubt an utterly consuming, gripping, page turning read that just keeps anteing up.

From what I believe, this is the first in a series and I can PROMISE you that I will be the first in line not only to read the next instalment but her other books as well!

I receive this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
